Building STAR champions Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and Representative Peter Welch (D-VT) wrote an article for the Capitol Hill news publication Roll Call yesterday outlining the job creation potential of both the Senate and House versions of the “Building STAR Energy Efficiency Act of 2010” (S. 3079/H.R. 5476).
Stating that “the only way to dig out of this recession is by creating new jobs,” Merkley and Welch highlighted Building STAR’s role in creating 150,000 quality jobs in the construction, manufacturing, and distribution sectors over the next two years. “No one program can completely address our energy challenges or provide a new job to everyone who needs one, but Building STAR is a great place to start,” Merkley and Welch wrote.
By utilizing product rebates and low-cost loans, Building STAR would help building owners overcome the upfront cost barriers associated with large scale building retrofits. When you eliminate this barrier, it is easier for building owners to install energy efficient technologies, which leads to energy savings – more than $3 billion annually.
